Thanks for the replies to my previous message. I was advised to try kick starting it. It started 4 th kick! So I’m putting the fault down to a faulty Boyer Branson M3 (box is coloured black) that I installed in 1990

So, what is the best system for my standard T160?

I would say an other Boyer ! but others would say the new tryspark well i think that what its called but there £220 +vat from LPW so not cheep. I’ve been using Boyer since 1978 and only had one box go down on me and that was after a long time in storage. you can get them on Ebay for £110 and their called Mk4 now and still black !

Thanks Timothy, I’m going for Boyer again. I have sent box for testing, but I’m pretty certain that is where the fault is.

if it started 4th kick then i don’t see why you think that the boyer is at fault – if it was at fault then it wouldn’t start at all.

if it starts on 4th kick but almost starts & fails to catch on the electric starter, then its a combination of several  electric problems ie voltage loses with in your wiring and the original starter cables being very poor in passing enough current plus the Boyer Mk 3 is touchy when voltage drops below 12v. So the result is that, to turn the starter, the system tries to pass current though inadequate starter cables, as it tries harder it temporarily drains too much voltage from the system so that the boyer doesn’t have quite enough volts remaining to give you a good spark. Also if you have a lead acid battery then they are marginal at best

First thing would be to replace starter cables; there are 3 cables, one from battery to solenoid, a short one from solenoid to starter and a 3rd is the big thick earth from battery to rear engine plate (make sure that is earthed to bare metal and not to powder coated frame). Try Vehicle Wiring Products in Derbyshire, they can make up cable if you phone with lengths etc. Second thing is try a Motobatt battery which will give you a bigger shove (there’s little point doing this until you have got better capacity starter cables). Also look at the wiring generally as it goes around the bike and up to  the handlebar switches make sure you have clean connections. Finally if all else fails you can replace the Mk3 boyer black box with a Mk4 Boyer balck box (simply plug in a new box and leave everything else the same) the Mk4 is said to be an improved Mk3 which can  tolerate lower voltage.

The above is a summary of what i did to my T160 over a couple of years to get it starting better  – its still got the Mk3 boyer that it came to me with!
